According to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) data, India's urban unemployment rate for individuals aged 15 years and older eased to 6.6% in the January-March 2026 quarter, down from 6.7% in the previous quarter. Conversely, rural unemployment rose to 4.3%, up from 4.0% in October-December 2025. The overall labor force participation rate (LFPR) for this age group stood at 55.5%, a slight decline from 55.8% in the prior quarter. Urban LFPR decreased to 50.2%, while rural LFPR fell to 58.2%. The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) also saw a decline to 52.8% from 53.1%. Notably, regular wage and salaried employment in rural areas increased to 15.5%, while the share of self-employed workers decreased to 62.5%. The survey indicated that an average of 57.4 crore (574 million) individuals aged 15 and above were employed during this quarter, including 40.2 crore males and 17.2 crore females, based on data collected from 561,822 individuals across the country.
