In Delhi, new signboards marking the environmentally sensitive 'Zone O' have been installed across several localities along the Yamuna floodplain, raising concerns among residents about possible demolition of unauthorized constructions. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) clarified that the initiative aims to demarcate protected areas, enhance public awareness, and prevent further encroachments. Approximately 300 boards will be erected to inform residents about construction restrictions in Zone O, which encompasses large sections of the riverbed and floodplain. Areas such as Madanpur Khadar, Sonia Vihar, and Karawal Nagar have been specifically targeted for these installations. While the DDA asserts that no demolition plans are currently in place, they emphasize that unauthorized structures are not permitted and enforcement actions could occur at any time. This move follows directives from the Delhi High Court and the National Green Tribunal regarding unauthorized constructions in the zone. The recent regularisation of unauthorized colonies under the Pradhan Mantri-Unauthorised Colonies in Delhi Awas Adhikar Yojana (PM-UDAY) has excluded 90 colonies located in Zone O, indicating that decisions on these areas will be made separately.
