On Monday, the Supreme Court of India, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, dismissed a petition challenging the demolition drive in Gurugram, instructing the petitioners to seek relief from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, representing the petitioners, argued that local authorities are conducting demolitions without issuing show-cause notices, claiming that the actions misconstrue an interim high court order. The Supreme Court noted that if the high court's order is being misinterpreted, the petitioners should address their concerns there. This comes after the Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed a controversial 'stilt-plus-four floors' building policy, which allowed more extensive residential constructions, citing public safety risks. Following this stay, Haryana officials initiated an anti-encroachment campaign targeting unauthorized constructions, starting with areas in Gurugram.
