The International Air Transport Association projects that Sustainable Aviation Fuel production will only reach 2.4 million tonnes by 2026, accounting for 0.8% of aviation fuel use. IATA's Director General, Willie Walsh, emphasizes the need for coordinated action to overcome policy inefficiencies and boost SAF production.
- 01Global Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production is expected to reach 2.4 million tonnes by 2026, only 0.8% of aviation fuel use.
- 02IATA calls for coordinated action to scale up SAF production, including expanding renewable energy supply and ensuring open access to fuel infrastructure.
- 03E-SAF production targets set by the EU and UK are criticized as unrealistic, with current capacity at only 0.02 million tonnes.
- 0489% of passengers support decarbonizing air transport, with a willingness to pay more for sustainability.
- 05Nearly half of travelers consider carbon emissions when choosing flights, indicating a shift towards sustainability in travel decisions.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released estimates indicating that global Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production is projected to reach only 2.4 million tonnes by 2026, representing a mere 0.8% of total aviation fuel use. This disappointing figure comes five years after the aviation industry committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. IATA's Director General, Willie Walsh, highlighted the need for coordinated action across four key areas to accelerate SAF production, including expanding renewable energy supply and ensuring fair access to fuel infrastructure. Additionally, the feasibility of e-SAF (electro-SAF) production is questioned, with current capacity at just 0.02 million tonnes. Despite these challenges, a recent IATA survey revealed strong passenger support for decarbonization, with 89% believing the industry should continue reducing emissions. Moreover, two-thirds of passengers expressed willingness to pay more to offset emissions, reflecting a growing emphasis on sustainability in travel choices.
