The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in Idukki district, Kerala, prompting authorities to be prepared for possible landslides and mudslides in hilly areas. The alert indicates expected rainfall amounts between 64.5 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours. To ensure public safety, District Collector Dineshan Cheruvatt has prohibited night travel in mountainous regions from 7 PM to 6 AM. This decision is backed by the Disaster Management Act, 2005, highlighting the seriousness of the weather conditions. The IMD also forecasts strong winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h over Kerala and Lakshadweep from June 7 to June 9. Heavy rainfall is anticipated to persist in Kerala from June 7 to June 13, with varying intensities, including very heavy rainfall at certain locations. The IMD had previously announced the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon on June 4, marking the start of the rainy season in the region.
