As India observes World Earth Day, the need for green elections becomes increasingly urgent. The concept of green democracy merges ecological responsibility with democratic participation, emphasizing that elections should not contribute to environmental degradation. Past initiatives in states like Punjab, Maharashtra, and Bihar demonstrate that sustainable election practices can be implemented effectively. These efforts include reducing single-use plastics and enhancing waste management during elections. However, a national framework to measure and manage the environmental impact of elections is still lacking. To address this, the Election Commission, along with state and local bodies, must develop protocols for campaign materials, polling operations, and waste disposal. Political parties must also adopt sustainable practices in their campaigns. By transitioning to green elections, India can enhance democratic legitimacy, modernize election management, and align political practices with sustainable development goals. This reform is not merely symbolic; it is a necessary step towards responsible governance.
