Tesla is recalling 173 Cybertrucks due to concerns that the wheel studs could separate, potentially causing wheels to detach while driving. This recall affects vehicles sold between 2024 and 2026 that are equipped with the base 18-inch steel wheels. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the issue arises from the brake rotors, which may develop cracks under severe road conditions, leading to a risk of wheel detachment. The problem was traced back to pre-production testing in 2025, where it was found that the geometry of the wheel hub and bearing could contribute to rotor cracking. Although no loss of vehicle function was detected during early tests, engineers warned that continued use under strain could eventually lead to separation of the wheel stud from the hub. Tesla noted that a change management error prevented planned durability improvements from being incorporated when production started on August 28, 2025. The company identified a real-world case in October 2025 where a customer reported braking vibrations, and cracked brake rotors were discovered during inspection. No crashes or injuries have been linked to this issue. Tesla has notified all stores and service centers about the recall, with letters to owners scheduled for dispatch on June 20.
