A recent investigation by Which? has uncovered the presence of tremolite asbestos in children's sand kits sold on major online platforms, including Amazon, Asda, eBay, and TikTok Shop. The findings are alarming, as tremolite asbestos is a banned substance known to cause severe lung diseases when inhaled. The affected products include a 'Montessori sand art tray' and a 'GL Style Sand Bottle Art Heart or Stars' set. Since November 2025, the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued over 39 recall notices related to asbestos-contaminated sand products, leading to the closure of schools and parks in some areas. Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Rights Policy at Which?, has called for stronger regulations to hold online marketplaces accountable for the safety of products sold by third-party sellers. In response to the findings, Amazon is removing the contaminated products, while Asda has issued a full recall. eBay and TikTok have also taken measures to address the issue.
