R Sreelekha, a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, is making her political debut as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Vattiyoorkavu constituency in Thiruvananthapuram for the upcoming 2026 Kerala Assembly elections. Born on December 25, 1960, in Thiruvananthapuram, she became Kerala's first woman IPS officer and later its first woman Director General of Police (DGP). After joining the BJP in 2024, she was elected as a councillor from Ward No. 41, Sasthamangalam, in 2025. Sreelekha will compete against CPI(M)'s V. K. Prasanth and Congress leader K. Muraleedharan in a closely watched three-way contest.
