The Maharashtra government has announced that taxi, auto, and app-based transport drivers must possess basic proficiency in Marathi to operate in the state. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik clarified that while written fluency is not necessary, this requirement aims to support drivers' livelihoods rather than restrict them. The decision follows complaints regarding the ineffective implementation of a 2019 order on Marathi communication. To facilitate this initiative, the Konkan Marathi Literary Association and the Mumbai Marathi Literary Association will establish training centers in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Drivers completing the training will receive certificates, which will assist them in future licensing and permit processes. Sarnaik emphasized that the focus will be on public awareness and encouragement rather than compulsion, aiming to promote Marathi language usage and improve communication with citizens.
