India is witnessing the introduction of flex-fuel vehicles, primarily from Hero MotoCorp and Maruti Suzuki, which are designed to run on higher ethanol blends like E85. The government aims for a 50% adoption rate of these vehicles in the automotive market. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted that achieving this target could lead to an additional demand for 311.8 crore litres of ethanol, generating an estimated ₹12,403 crore in income for farmers and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 66.4 lakh metric tonnes. The transition to flex-fuel vehicles is expected to benefit the agricultural sector by increasing demand for crops like sugarcane and maize, thus merging agricultural output with fuel production. Furthermore, this shift could enhance India's energy security by decreasing reliance on crude oil imports and supporting employment across various sectors, including agriculture and logistics. While challenges remain, particularly in establishing ethanol supply infrastructure, the potential economic and environmental impacts are significant.
