The hacking group ShinyHunters has reportedly breached Instructure, a cloud-based educational technology provider, claiming to have stolen data from 8,809 schools globally. The breach includes 280 million records containing names, email addresses, student ID numbers, and messages exchanged between users. Although Instructure has confirmed the breach, it stated that no passwords, dates of birth, government identifiers, or financial information were compromised. Following the breach, many students experienced login issues with their Canvas accounts, with some receiving messages from hackers threatening to release the stolen data by May 12 if a settlement is not negotiated. Instructure has responded by rolling out security patches and temporarily shutting down Canvas to address the vulnerabilities exploited by the hackers.
