The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune has introduced guidelines permitting the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) for assignments and research papers. Adopted in March, the guidelines state that AI use is allowed by default unless specifically prohibited by the competent authority. This decision comes as institutions worldwide struggle to adapt to the rapid advancements in AI technology, which can generate solutions for academic assignments in minutes. The guidelines, developed by an AI committee led by Professor Sutirth Dey, emphasize that users must take full responsibility for the accuracy and originality of AI-generated content. If a ban on AI use is desired, it must be communicated in advance, potentially using methods like viva-voce assessments to ensure students understand the material. Additionally, any significant contributions made by AI must be acknowledged, particularly in theses and academic papers. The guidelines also highlight the importance of data privacy, prohibiting the upload of sensitive information to AI platforms. This initiative not only affects IISER Pune but may also serve as a model for other educational institutions navigating the complexities of AI in academia.
