The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune celebrated its 20th anniversary on Monday, reflecting on its evolution into a premier science education institution. Starting from August 2026, IISER Pune will offer select courses to industry professionals, particularly those with a B.Sc. or equivalent, allowing them to attend classes alongside regular students in fields such as information technology, earth sciences, and biotechnology. This initiative aims to enhance the connection between academia and industry while encouraging lifelong learning. Director Sunil Bhagwat emphasized the importance of integrating teaching with research from the undergraduate level, preparing students to contribute to significant scientific advancements. Established in 2006, IISER Pune began with only 40 students and has since expanded to over 2,700 alumni. The institute has been at the forefront of research, publishing over 6,000 papers and filing more than 100 patents, with a focus on innovations in quantum computing, carbon capture, and water purification. IISER Pune also engages in extensive science outreach and teacher training programs across India.
