Boston Dynamics has upgraded its four-legged Spot robot dog to accurately read analog thermometers and pressure gauges in industrial environments, thanks to Google DeepMind's latest AI model, Gemini Robotics-ER 1.6, announced on April 14. This model enhances robotic capabilities by providing 'agentic vision', which combines visual reasoning with the ability to execute code, allowing the robot to perform complex visual inspections. The accuracy of reading instruments has jumped from 23% with the previous model to 98% with the new version. The Gemini Robotics-ER 1.6 can still achieve 86% accuracy without the agentic vision feature. Spot is being trialed in various industrial facilities, including automotive factories owned by Hyundai Motor Group, where it conducts inspections that require interpreting multiple visual elements. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in robotics, enabling machines to interact more effectively with their physical environments.
