A new study published in *Aging & Mental Health* reveals that loneliness in older adults is associated with lower scores on memory tests, although it does not accelerate cognitive decline. The six-year study followed over 10,000 adults aged 65 to 94 across Europe, highlighting the need to address loneliness in cognitive health.
- 01Loneliness is linked to lower memory test scores in older adults.
- 02The study involved 10,217 participants aged 65 to 94 from 12 European countries.
- 03Memory decline rates were similar for lonely and non-lonely individuals over six years.
- 04The research suggests loneliness affects initial memory state rather than its decline.
- 05Addressing loneliness is crucial for improving cognitive performance in older adults.

A recent longitudinal study published in *Aging & Mental Health* has found a significant link between loneliness and memory impairment in older adults. Researchers analyzed data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), tracking 10,217 adults aged 65 to 94 across 12 European countries over a six-year period. The study revealed that individuals experiencing higher levels of loneliness scored lower on both immediate and delayed recall tests. However, the rate of memory decline over the study period was comparable to those who did not report feelings of loneliness. Luis Carlos Venegas-Sanabria, the lead researcher from the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Universidad del Rosario, emphasized that loneliness may primarily impact the initial state of memory rather than accelerate its decline. This research underscores the importance of addressing loneliness as a significant factor affecting cognitive performance among older adults.
