The Madras High Court in Chennai has issued a stay on the Tamil Nadu cybercrime wing's directive to suspend or block 18 posts on the social media platform X, which included content from YouTuber Maridhas. This interim order was granted by a vacation bench consisting of Justice L Victoria Gowri and Justice N Senthil Kumar in response to a plea filed by P Chockalingam, the north Tamil Nadu president of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP). The Tamil Nadu cybercrime wing had ordered the blocking of several accounts on May 8, citing that they contained comments critical of the state government. Chockalingam's plea contended that the action violated freedom of expression, as the posts in question were merely political criticism and did not incite violence or threaten public order. The bench has directed the Tamil Nadu government to respond to these claims and has scheduled the next hearing for June 8.
