The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) is preparing draft regulations for a multi-year tariff framework that will implement power tariff revisions every year from 2027 to 2031. This framework aims to adjust consumption and fixed charges for all consumer categories across the state. The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TNPDCL) is expected to submit a petition for this tariff formula by November 2023, with a decision to be made within 120 days after stakeholder feedback. Over the past four years, tariffs were adjusted based on the consumer price index, and the state government has absorbed some of the increased charges to alleviate the financial burden on domestic consumers, raising the subsidy to ₹19,000 crore (approximately $2.3 billion USD). The new regulations also grant TNERC the authority to revise tariffs independently if TNPDCL does not file a petition.
