On Saturday, farmers in Tamil Nadu demonstrated outside the Coimbatore Collectorate, voicing their opposition to the state government's farm loan waiver slab and demanding a complete waiver for all farmers. T Venugopal, the State President of the Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association, stated that the decision was made without consulting farmer groups and would not benefit the agricultural community. Protestors emphasized that the current waiver structure fails to address the needs of farmers, particularly small and marginal farmers, who were promised complete waivers during the election campaign led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. The farmers criticized the new scheme for imposing maximum limits and a graded waiver structure, which they deemed inadequate, particularly as loans exceeding certain amounts would only qualify for a minimal waiver of ₹5,000. This dissatisfaction has led to earlier protests in Perambalur, where farmers accused the government of not fulfilling its electoral promises regarding crop loan waivers.
