The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has labeled the recently enacted anti-sacrilege law in Punjab as a direct assault on the Sikh faith. During a core committee meeting led by president Sukhbir Singh Badal, the party expressed concerns that the law creates fear among devotees regarding the installation of the Guru Granth Sahib in their homes. The law, which amends the original 2008 Act, was passed unanimously by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on April 13, received assent from Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on April 17, and was notified on April 20. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann defended the law, stating that it enjoys widespread public support and will not be withdrawn. SAD plans to announce further actions following a verdict from the Akal Takht Jathedar regarding the law. Additionally, the party is preparing to contest upcoming civic elections, with candidates expected to file nominations for eight municipal corporations and 102 municipal councils by May 26.
