The digital mapping exercise for Census 2027 started on Thursday in the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Delhi Cantonment areas, with over 700 officials deployed for the initiative. This marks India's first technology-driven enumeration process, which will continue until May 15. The groundwork included a self-enumeration phase from April 1 to April 15, where more than 5,000 residents submitted their details online. The current phase involves digital mapping and house-listing, with enumerators verifying their areas using digital maps. Door-to-door data collection is set to begin on April 19, where enumerators will ask heads of households 33 questions. Each enumerator, primarily teachers from NDMC schools, will receive ₹9,000 for the house-listing phase and ₹16,000 for the population enumeration phase. Preparations have been made to address challenges posed by the summer heat, including providing enumerators with ORS packets and medical support if needed. The census aims to cover both systematic and unsystematic settlements, with unsystematic settlements accounting for less than 10% of the total in these areas.
