A new analysis reveals that type 2 diabetes rates are increasing at twice the rate in women under 40 compared to older women. This trend is partly attributed to inadequate follow-up care for those who experienced gestational diabetes during pregnancy, according to Diabetes UK.
- 01From 2017/18 to 2023/24, type 2 diabetes diagnoses in women under 40 surged by 47%, compared to 22% in those aged 40-79.
- 02Approximately 10% to 20% of pregnant women experience gestational diabetes, which can lead to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
- 03Only 57% of women with gestational diabetes received an annual HbA1c test post-pregnancy.
- 04Over 11% of women with gestational diabetes developed prediabetes within a year, and 15% developed type 2 diabetes within ten years.
- 05Diabetes UK is urging the UK government to enhance postnatal support for women with gestational diabetes.

A recent analysis by Diabetes UK indicates that type 2 diabetes is rising significantly faster in younger women, with a 47% increase in diagnoses among those under 40 from 2017/18 to 2023/24, compared to a 22% rise in older women. The charity attributes this alarming trend to insufficient follow-up care for women who experience gestational diabetes (GD) during pregnancy, which affects 10% to 20% of pregnant women. GD can lead to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, yet only 57% of affected women received the recommended annual HbA1c blood tests post-pregnancy. Colette Marshall, chief executive of Diabetes UK, emphasized the critical need for improved care, stating that many women receive little to no follow-up support after pregnancy despite their increased risk. Personal accounts, such as that of Meg, a 33-year-old teacher, highlight the lack of information and follow-up regarding diabetes risks after experiencing GD. Diabetes UK has called on the government to take urgent action to enhance postnatal care for women with GD.
