The introduction of stricter customs checks by Nepali authorities along the Nepal-India border has triggered significant unrest among local residents. The new regulation, effective since mid-April 2023, imposes customs duties on goods valued over NPR 100 brought from India. This has particularly impacted daily life in the Terai region, where many residents rely on cross-border trade for essential items like food and clothing. In response to the unrest, Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the Nepali government's intention is to combat informal trade and smuggling. However, he reassured that individuals carrying household goods for personal use would not face restrictions. Protests have erupted, with demonstrators in Kathmandu demanding the cancellation of customs duties and expressing concerns that the new rules hinder free movement and damage longstanding relations between Nepal and India. Local lawmakers are also advocating for a review of these customs regulations to alleviate the burden on border communities.
