The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India confirmed that Indian nationals are safe after being part of the crew on vessels seized by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the detention of two ships, MSC Francesca and Epaminondas, claiming they jeopardized maritime security and operated without necessary permits. The IRGC reportedly opened fire on the Epaminondas after it ignored warnings. The MEA is in touch with Iranian authorities to ensure the safe return of the vessels. Tensions in the region have escalated, with maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz dropping by over 96% from normal levels, with only 18 vessels passing through from April 19 to 22. This is a stark contrast to the 120 daily transits recorded during peacetime. Additionally, the number of maritime incidents has surged, with seven attacks reported since the recent escalation.
