Air India, the Tata Group's airline, announced a 37% reduction in international flights from June to August, cutting monthly departures to approximately 1,240 from 1,987 in April. This decision is attributed to ongoing airspace restrictions and soaring aviation fuel prices, exacerbated by conflicts in West Asia. The airline's operational challenges have been compounded by the closure of Pakistani airspace since April 2025, which has increased flight durations and costs by an estimated ₹4,000 crore (roughly $480 million USD). The airline has temporarily suspended flights to Chicago and Newark, while reducing frequencies to several other international destinations by 30-50%. Despite these cuts, experts suggest it may take up to a year for Air India to stabilize its financial performance. The airline is also undergoing a leadership transition following the resignation of its CEO, Campbell Wilson, in March.
