Protests have erupted outside the center, with detainees initiating a hunger and labor strike on May 22 to voice their grievances. Governor Mikie Sherrill expressed concerns over the lack of transparency, questioning why the GEO Group, which holds a $1 billion government contract, would restrict health inspectors if the conditions are indeed safe. Reports indicate severe issues within Delaney Hall, including spoiled food, undrinkable water, and inadequate access to hygiene products and medical care. Additionally, there have been outbreaks of diseases such as COVID-19 and flu among detainees, with at least one case of tuberculosis reported. Newark city officials have also indicated plans to expand their lawsuit against the GEO Group if access to the facility remains restricted.
