On April 29, a police constable named Joseph, attached to the Chennai High Court Complex police station, was arrested for sexually assaulting a woman and extorting money from her and her boyfriend near Besant Nagar beach in Chennai, India. The couple, both third-year engineering students, were approached by Joseph around 8:10 PM. He threatened them with legal action while flashing a torchlight into their car and showing a police identity card. Fearing repercussions, the students complied with his demands, transferring ₹3,000 online and later withdrawing ₹8,000 from an ATM. During the boyfriend's absence at the ATM, Joseph sexually assaulted the woman. After the incident, the woman reported the crime to her family, who then assisted her in filing a complaint at the Shastri Nagar police station. Following an investigation that included examining CCTV footage, police identified Joseph and arrested him. He has since been charged with extortion and sexual assault and has been remanded in judicial custody.
