The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a directive for schools to finalize their third language (R3) for Class 6 by May 31, 2026. This initiative aligns with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE-2023). Many schools have already begun the process by uploading their selected R3 languages on the OASIS portal, but some have yet to comply. The CBSE has provided additional time for these schools to complete their administrative preparations. Schools that have submitted language choices inconsistent with policy recommendations are also given the chance to revise their entries by the same deadline. For scheduled languages, official R3 textbooks will be accessible on the NCERT and CBSE websites by July 1, 2026. Schools opting for non-scheduled languages are advised to utilize SCERT textbooks or other state-recognized resources, ensuring their curriculum meets the competencies outlined in NCFSE-2023. Furthermore, schools that have not started teaching at least two native Indian languages within the R1, R2, R3 framework must begin instruction without exception from July 1, 2026.
