According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report titled ‘Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India 2024’, Uttar Pradesh recorded 42,987 accidental deaths in 2024, making it the third worst-affected state in India, following Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. This figure represents a marginal decline of 0.5% from 43,207 deaths in 2023, but still accounts for over 9% of the national total of 4,67,857 accidental deaths, which translates to nearly 118 deaths per day.
The report highlights that men were disproportionately affected, with 35,023 male victims compared to 7,964 female victims, reflecting the higher exposure of men to hazardous occupations and activities. The economically productive age groups faced the most significant losses, with 13,470 deaths in the 18-30 age bracket and 12,912 in the 30-45 range. Additionally, 1,715 children under 14 years old also lost their lives to preventable accidents.
Among cities, Lucknow recorded the highest fatalities at 1,006, marking a 40.1% increase from the previous year. The NCRB report indicates that despite advancements in infrastructure, safety enforcement and emergency response systems remain inadequate, contributing to the high rates of accidental deaths in Uttar Pradesh.
