On Tuesday, the Bombay High Court dismissed a bribery case against Sashidhar Jagdishan, Managing Director and CEO of HDFC Bank, which had been filed by the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust. The court described the complaint as a 'counterblast' to the bank's ongoing recovery efforts for over ₹65 crore (approximately $7.8 million USD) owed by Splendour Gems Ltd, a company linked to the Trust's founders. The court noted that the complaint arose from longstanding tensions between the Trust's previous and current trustees, and it found no substantial evidence to justify the investigation into the allegations against Jagdishan. The Trust had claimed that a diary discovered during recovery proceedings indicated payments of ₹2.05 crore (approximately $240,000 USD) to Jagdishan, allegedly directed by Chetan Mehta. However, the court rejected claims that the Trust's founder, Kishore Mehta, died due to pressure from the bank. Ultimately, the court ruled that continuing the case would constitute an 'abuse of the process of court' and granted Jagdishan's plea to quash the FIR and set aside the magistrate's order for a police probe.
