The study found alarming rates of antisemitic content exposure, raising concerns about social media's role in radicalization.
- 01The report titled 'Algorithmic Escalation' shows that Instagram's algorithm can direct users to antisemitic content from mainstream wellness topics.

A new report from the Antisemitism Research Center (ARC) highlights how Instagram's recommendation algorithm can lead users from mainstream wellness and fitness content to antisemitic conspiracy theories and extremist propaganda. The study, titled 'Algorithmic Escalation: From Self-Improvement Content to Antisemitism on Instagram,' found that users did not need to actively seek out antisemitic content to encounter it. Instead, Instagram's algorithm guided users from popular self-improvement topics to a stream of antisemitic narratives and coded hate content. Researchers created two accounts focused on wellness and fitness, which were served alarming amounts of antisemitic material over just three days. The wellness account received over 32% antisemitic content, while the fitness account had 24%. This rapid escalation raises concerns about how algorithms can inadvertently promote hate. The report calls for Meta to review its recommendation systems and implement safeguards to prevent users from being directed toward extremist content.
