A serious data breach involving the UK Biobank charity has come to light, with confidential medical information of about 500,000 volunteer participants listed for sale on the Chinese e-commerce platform Alibaba. UK Technology Minister Ian Murray informed Parliament that the government collaborated with the Chinese government and Alibaba to swiftly remove the listings after being alerted on Monday. The UK Biobank, an independent charity that collects health data for research, has since revoked access to the institutions responsible for the breach and paused further data access until a technical solution is implemented to prevent such incidents in the future. Murray reassured the public that the compromised data did not include names or contact details of participants. The UK Biobank has referred itself to the UK's Information Commissioner's Office for investigation and is taking the matter seriously, with new guidance on data control expected soon. Professor Sir Rory Collins, CEO of UK Biobank, expressed gratitude for the quick response from both governments and reassured participants that their data remains de-identified.
