If confirmed by the National Assembly, Han will become South Korea's first female prime minister in 20 years, following Han Myeong-sook's term starting in 2006. President Lee's choice indicates a shift towards prioritizing economic and industrial policy over political affiliations as he enters his second year in office. Han, who has a background as a tech executive, has previously overseen policies for small and midsize enterprises, startups, and venture firms. The nomination was made public by Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik, who noted her extensive experience in the private sector and her role in supporting small businesses. Prime Minister Kim Min-seok will remain in his position until the confirmation process for Han is completed, with Kim also being considered for a future leadership role in the Democratic Party.
