Mamata Banerjee (chief of the Trinamool Congress) proposed an alliance among opposition parties to counter the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal. However, this call was met with firm rejection from the Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist). CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim stated that they would not ally with anyone perceived as corrupt or communal, reflecting deep-seated animosity towards Banerjee's leadership. The recent elections saw the BJP winning 207 out of 294 seats, while the TMC secured only 80 seats, with Congress and CPI(M) winning just two and one seat respectively. The Congress spokesperson Soumya Aich Roy criticized Banerjee for her past vilification of their alliance and questioned her invitation to national parties, suggesting it was insincere. CPI state secretary Swapan Banerjee echoed similar sentiments, asserting that joining forces with Banerjee was out of the question due to her authoritarian governance style. Following the elections, TMC appointed Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the leader of the opposition in the assembly, alongside other key leaders.
