Maya Manchester, a restaurant recognized in the Michelin Guide, has shut its doors after just two years in operation. The closure, which took effect at the end of May 2024, was attributed to the increasingly difficult conditions within the hospitality industry. Located in Manchester's Gay Village, the restaurant opened in April 2024 at the site of the former celebrity hotspot Mash and Air nightclub. Chef Gabe Lea, who previously worked at renowned establishments such as the two-Michelin-starred Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, crafted a classic French menu that garnered significant acclaim. In a heartfelt Instagram post announcing the closure, the restaurant's management expressed gratitude to their team and highlighted the challenges faced by small, independent brands in the current market. Founder Scottie Bhattarai stated that the immediate priority is to support the staff and ensure they are compensated properly. The decision to close reflects a broader trend affecting many small businesses in the hospitality sector, which are struggling to maintain sustainability amidst rising operational challenges.
