WhatsApp has launched an artificial intelligence-based detection system to combat the rising threat of digital arrest scams, which have particularly affected senior citizens in India. The initiative has led to the removal of 9,400 scam accounts since January 2023, as reported by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The platform's general, R Venkataramani, stated that the technology will identify and eliminate accounts impersonating law enforcement agencies. Following concerns raised by I4C and other governmental bodies, WhatsApp conducted a special investigation and implemented a structured approach to track and dismantle scam networks operating in India. The new safety measures include detection models to alert users about suspicious interactions and plans to hide profile photos of unknown callers to prevent identity misuse. The Union government is also involved in a broader crackdown on digital fraud, responding to the Supreme Court's directives to address the issue.
