WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has taken significant action against digital arrest scams in India by banning over 9,400 accounts in a 12-week investigation that began in January 2023. The Attorney General of India, R. Venkataramani, revealed this information during a Supreme Court case regarding these scams. The investigation uncovered that many of the fraudulent accounts were operated from scam centres in Southeast Asia, particularly in Cambodia, where scammers impersonated law enforcement agencies like the Delhi Police and CBI using official logos to mislead victims. In response to this crisis, WhatsApp has introduced new enforcement tools and will implement Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) binding to enhance security. This move is part of WhatsApp's commitment to comply with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, which includes identifying and labeling synthetically generated content often used in scams. The company will also share aggregate enforcement data and collaborate closely with Indian authorities to strengthen its defenses against such fraudulent activities.
