The Assam cabinet officially approved the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on Wednesday, as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The UCC aims to standardize laws regarding marriage, property rights, and registration of marriages and divorces, while exempting tribal customs and rituals. A legislation will be introduced in the assembly on May 26. Additionally, the cabinet formed a task force to create 200,000 jobs over the next five years, aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) electoral manifesto. In light of recent global tensions, austerity measures were also approved, including a six-month halt on new government vehicle purchases and restrictions on foreign travel for officials. The cabinet plans to commemorate the centenary of cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika with a museum in Guwahati, allocated a budget of ₹32 crore (approximately $3.9 million USD). Cabinet expansion is anticipated in early June following the assembly session starting on May 21.
