Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to capitalize on the recent election of Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale by initiating talks for a new treaty aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and countering China's influence in the region. Wale, known for his pro-Australia stance, is visiting Australia for the first time since his election. Albanese and Wale are expected to announce the start of negotiations for a comprehensive treaty, building on an existing bilateral security agreement established in 2017. Additionally, they will sign a memorandum of understanding to advance a $190 million funding package intended to enhance the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force, which includes establishing a new training center in Honiara. This initiative reflects Australia’s ongoing efforts to solidify its role as a key security partner in the Pacific, complementing agreements with other nations such as Tuvalu, Nauru, and Papua New Guinea. Albanese highlighted the significance of this relationship, stating that collaboration is essential in facing global challenges together.
