In Tamil Nadu, where voting is conducted in a single phase, the contest is mainly between the ruling Congress–DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the BJP–AIADMK coalition, with actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) adding complexity to the race. Voting began at 7:00 am and will continue until 6:00 pm, with 4,023 candidates contesting for 234 seats. Chief Minister MK Stalin seeks re-election from Kolathur in Chennai, while his son, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, contests from Chepauk–Thiruvallikeni. In West Bengal, the first phase includes 152 constituencies and is critical for the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP, with over 3.60 crore electors eligible to vote, including 1.75 crore women. Security is tight, with 2,450 companies of central paramilitary forces deployed. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4.
