On Wednesday, the Karnataka High Court, led by Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice CM Poonacha, decided against imposing a ban on tiger safaris in the state. This decision comes amidst a public interest litigation filed by Mysuru resident V Ravi Kumar, who argues that these safaris violate conservation norms established in the Supreme Court ruling of the TN Godavarman Thirumulpad v. Union of India case. The court has directed the state government to submit a detailed response outlining the demarcation of core, buffer, and tourism zones, as well as maps indicating the locations of safari operations. The state government had only recently resumed safari operations in February after a four-month hiatus, which had led to numerous cancellations at local resorts during the peak tourism season from December to February. This suspension followed several tiger attacks on villagers, prompting the forest department to capture over 20 tigers.
