In a swift response to Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann's recent announcement, the Punjab Government is drafting a law aimed at regulating private school fees. School Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has instructed the School Education Department to create legislation that will cap annual fee increases at 5%. This law will also require private schools that have raised fees beyond 15% over the past three years to refund the excess amounts to parents. This initiative is designed to protect more than 32 lakh students currently enrolled in approximately 7,800 private schools across Punjab. Bains highlighted that the government prioritizes accessible and affordable education, asserting that education should not be exploited for commercial gain. The proposed legislation seeks to establish a transparent and accountable framework for private schools, ensuring they operate in the best interests of students and their families. The Chief Minister's commitment to curbing profiteering in education aligns with the Supreme Court of India's stance against commercialization in the sector, reinforcing the need for reasonable fee structures without profit motives.
