On May 5, 2023, the Meghalaya cabinet, led by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, declared the chocolate mahseer (Neolissochilus hexagonolepis) as the state fish. This decision aims to conserve and promote the indigenous fish species found in the state's rivers, enhancing awareness of aquatic biodiversity. Additionally, the cabinet approved a revised estimate for the New Shillong Township Water Supply Scheme, increasing the project cost from ₹553 crore to ₹770 crore (approximately $93 million USD) due to necessary adjustments in the dam site and infrastructure requirements. The cabinet also amended the Meghalaya Building Bye Laws, reducing the minimum plot size requirement from 50,000 sq ft to 37,500 sq ft, allowing more landowners to engage in urban development. Furthermore, land banks will be created in East Garo Hills and North Garo Hills districts, acquiring 93.59 acres at a cost of ₹7 crore and 26 acres at ₹3.9 crore, respectively, to support future projects. Other decisions included revisions to sports infrastructure cost norms and regularization of ad hoc employees.
