Rev. Ignatius P. Maternowski, a Catholic priest from Holyoke, Massachusetts, is remembered for his heroic actions during D-Day, where he died while aiding wounded soldiers in Gueutteville, France. Born to Polish immigrants in 1912, Maternowski became a military chaplain with the 82nd Airborne Division. On June 6, 1944, he parachuted into France and established a makeshift hospital to treat injured American troops. Tragically, he was shot while negotiating with German forces for protection for the hospital. His sacrifice is honored in Normandy, where locals light candles and pray to him as “Père Maternowski.” A talk about his life and legacy will be held on June 11 at Our Lady of the Cross Church in Holyoke, aiming to keep his story alive in the community. Rev. James McCurry, who will lead the talk, emphasizes the importance of remembering such acts of bravery and compassion. Maternowski's remains were returned to the U.S. in 1948 and he was reburied in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery in South Hadley. The local community has embraced his legacy, declaring June 6 as a day of remembrance.
