The group claims to have stolen 40 million records containing personal information of both consumer and business customers. The breach was reportedly executed via a voice phishing attack that compromised an employee's Microsoft Entra account on April 1. While the attackers allege that they accessed customer names, email addresses, and other details, Charter has stated that no sensitive personal information or customer proprietary network information was taken. The company is currently alerting authorities and following its security protocols. ShinyHunters has been active in conducting social engineering campaigns to target corporate accounts, leading to data theft from various SaaS applications, including Salesforce. This incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by such extortion groups, which have previously targeted other firms, including Instructure, resulting in significant data breaches and ransom negotiations.
