Globe Telecom Inc. is set to roll out its 'direct-to-cell satellite' service in June, focusing initially on Android users. This innovative service will allow compatible mobile phones to connect directly to satellites, eliminating the need for external devices, provided users maintain a clear line of sight to the sky. Subscriptions will start at P99 for 30 days and P299 for 90 days, with complimentary access for Platinum subscribers and select postpaid users. The initiative aims to enhance mobile coverage for the 4% of the Philippine population currently without terrestrial access, particularly in remote areas of the Visayas and northern Philippines. Field tests conducted in Basilan and Bulacan have shown promising results, enabling users to send text messages and make calls via WhatsApp. Globe is the first telecom company in Southeast Asia to implement this Starlink-powered technology, which utilizes a network of over 650 low-earth orbit satellites to provide connectivity in previously unreachable regions.
