The Supreme Court of India has taken a strong stance against illegal sand mining activities within the National Chambal Sanctuary, summoning Rajasthan's top officials to appear in court on May 19. The court, led by Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta, expressed discontent over the state government's failure to curb illegal mining that threatens endangered wildlife, particularly gharials. Officials from various departments, including mining and transport, are required to submit individual compliance affidavits detailing measures taken to address the issue. The court has ordered the installation of high-resolution, Wi-Fi-enabled CCTV cameras along identified mining routes and mandated GPS tracking for all mining vehicles. Additionally, it has called for the establishment of joint patrol teams comprising police and forest officials for continuous monitoring. The court warned that continued negligence could result in severe actions, including a complete ban on sand mining in the region and personal accountability for officials involved. The apex court's directives aim to enforce stricter regulations and ensure the protection of the ecologically sensitive Chambal region.
