On Wednesday evening, unseasonal rain and hailstorms struck Pune, Maharashtra, providing brief relief from the summer heat but causing significant traffic disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert, predicting continued rainfall until April 25. Rainfall began around 5 PM, with areas like Kothrud and Talegaon Dabhade experiencing intense showers, while lighter rain fell in Hinjewadi, Aundh, and Sinhagad Road. Traffic congestion was reported, particularly in Hinjewadi, where waterlogged roads slowed movement. The sudden weather change comes as Pune has been experiencing peak summer temperatures between 39°C and 41°C. According to S D Sanap, a senior meteorologist at IMD Pune, hailstorms are often triggered by a western disturbance and high moisture levels, impacting localized areas. Similar weather patterns are expected to persist for the next few days. The IMD's weather bulletin indicates multiple systems influencing conditions across Maharashtra, including a fresh western disturbance and upper air cyclonic circulations. Farmers are concerned about crop damage from the unseasonal weather, while a heatwave warning remains in effect for parts of Vidarbha.
