The Indian government has set an ambitious target to install 2.7 lakh rooftop solar systems for domestic consumers in West Bengal over the next two years as part of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Union Power Minister Manohar Lal announced this initiative during a meeting with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in Kolkata. In addition, the Centre has instructed the state government to install two crore smart meters within the next 3-4 years, beginning in July 2023, focusing on government offices and large consumers. The WBSEDCL has already installed around 7 lakh smart meters, and the Centre will provide a grant of ₹900 per meter.
