Chennai is set to benefit from an anticipated increase in Krishna water inflow, which is crucial for addressing the declining storage levels in its reservoirs. Currently, the inflow from the Kandaleru reservoir in Andhra Pradesh is at a minimal rate of 70 cubic feet per second (cusecs), but officials from the Water Resources Department (WRD) have indicated that this is expected to rise to 400 cusecs in the next few days. The city requires approximately 4,000 million cubic feet of water for the second spell of supply as part of the Krishna Water Supply Project agreement with Andhra Pradesh. Presently, the five major reservoirs in Chennai, including Chembarambakkam and Poondi, hold about 6,552 million cubic feet, which is 56% of their total capacity. This storage is deemed sufficient to meet daily water needs until the northeast monsoon arrives. The inflow is also vital for irrigation and drinking water needs in areas like Tirupati and Kalahasti before reaching Chennai. The WRD has completed some improvement works on the KP canal to facilitate better water transfer.
